LIST PICK
FAKE LAUGH NEAR YOU
Tomorrow Fake Laugh heads off on tour with Gengahr and to celebrate that momentous occasion, he shares new single ‘Near You’. While listeners may take note of the lofi recording, the hazy pop melodies, or Karman Kahn’s endearing vocals, the track’s pay off is that hook-driven chorus. It’s signalled by playful guitar arrangements underpinning the fragile lines, “to say something, / cause that’s the done thing, / to say something,” before diving into those jangly strings, surf-rock drums and Kahn’s all-encompassing confusion. Speaking about the instant winner that is ‘Near You’, the musician says: "This is quite an old song, which I started writing a few years ago when I had a dizzying crush on someone that I hadn’t known for very long. It’s about the feeling of just not knowing what to do with yourself in the company of that person, and in the quest for their affection, acting like an absolute fool." No doubt we’ve all been there and can cherish the knowledge that this universal experience has been put into such a lovely song. We’re very much looking forward to Fake Laugh’s next album, titled Dining Alone, out on March 13th. - Hannah Thacker [Photo credit: Holly Whittaker]
